Why migraines and tension headaches respond so well to acupuncture, what the research says, and what to expect at AB Acupuncture on the Upper West Side

Acupuncture is one of the more successful interventions for recurring migraines.

If you live with migraines or chronic headaches, you've probably tried a lot of things — over-the-counter painkillers, prescriptions, blue-blocker glasses, eliminating triggers, dark rooms, sleep tracking. Some of it helps; none of it solves the underlying pattern. Acupuncture has one of the strongest research bases of any natural treatment for headaches and migraines, and in my practice it's one of the conditions that responds fastest.

Here's what acupuncture actually does for headaches and why it might be the missing piece.

Does acupuncture work for migraines?

Yes — and this is one of the few areas where the evidence is well established. Major clinical reviews, including those summarized by the Cochrane Collaboration, have found that regular acupuncture reduces both the frequency and the intensity of migraines, often as effectively as standard preventive medication, with fewer side effects.

What kinds of headaches can acupuncture treat?

The headaches I see most often respond to treatment include:

- Migraines (with or without aura)

- Tension headaches across the forehead, temples, and base of the skull

- Cervicogenic headaches (headaches driven by neck and upper back tension)

- Cluster headaches

- Hormonally-driven migraines

- Post-concussion headaches

- TMJ-related headaches and jaw tension

If your headaches are recent, severe, or unusual for you, please see a physician first to rule out anything urgent. For everything else, acupuncture is a strong fit.

How does acupuncture work for headaches?

Several mechanisms work at once.

At the level of the muscle, acupuncture releases tight bands in the neck, jaw, temples, and shoulders that are pulling on the head. For most NYC patients, this is a huge piece of the puzzle — phone neck, screen jaw, and chronic shoulder tension are the substrate that headaches grow on.

At the level of the nervous system, acupuncture quiets the sensitized pain pathways that turn small triggers (a glass of wine, a sleepless night, weather change) into a full migraine. It also shifts you out of sympathetic overdrive — and chronic stress is one of the biggest migraine triggers there is.

At the vascular level, acupuncture modulates blood flow and inflammation, which is relevant for migraines specifically.

What to expect at your first acupuncture appointment for migraines

Your first visit runs about 75–90 minutes. We talk through your history, your headache pattern, your triggers, sleep, stress, hormones, and what's worked or not worked. I check the muscles of your neck, shoulders, jaw, and scalp. Then you'll rest on a heated table while we work.

For headaches, I typically recommend an initial run of weekly sessions, then tapered as your headache frequency comes down. Most patients notice a real shift within 3–4 sessions.
