Why acupuncture is one of the most effective natural treatments for menstrual and hormonal issues, and what to expect at AB Acupuncture on the Upper West Side.

Painful periods, unpredictable cycles, mood swings that hijack the week before your period, cystic acne, bloating, insomnia around ovulation, energy that crashes for a week every month — for many women, hormonal issues are just background static of adult life. They don't have to be.
Acupuncture is one of the most effective natural treatments for menstrual and hormonal health, with a long research base and thousands of years of clinical use. Here's what it does and why it works.
How does acupuncture help with cycles and PMS?
Menstrual and hormonal issues are, at their core, a coordination problem. The hypothalamus, pituitary, ovaries, and adrenals are supposed to be in constant, precisely-timed conversation. When stress, poor sleep, inflammation, or nutritional gaps disrupt that conversation, hormones shift out of the pattern they're supposed to follow, and symptoms emerge.
Acupuncture works on that coordination system directly. It regulates the HPA axis (stress hormones), supports HPO axis function (reproductive hormones), reduces systemic inflammation, and calms the nervous system enough for hormonal signaling to work the way it's supposed to.
In Chinese medicine terms, this is about restoring the flow of Qi and Blood through the reproductive system, particularly through the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. In Western terms, it's about giving a stressed system the space to recalibrate.
What women's health conditions does acupuncture treat?
The most common patterns I see:
Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
Irregular or missing cycles
Heavy or prolonged bleeding
PMS and PMDD (mood swings, irritability, depression before period)
Hormonal acne, especially cyclical
Ovulation pain
Endometriosis pain
PCOS symptoms
Fertility support (both natural conception and IVF/IUI cycles)
Postpartum recovery
Perimenopause symptoms (covered more in a later post)
Acupuncture isn't a replacement for gynecological care — if you have symptoms, please see a doctor to rule out anything that needs medical intervention. But for the enormous space of "your labs are fine but you still feel awful," acupuncture is often what actually moves the needle.
What to expect at your first appointment for women's health
Your first visit at AB Acupuncture runs about 75–90 minutes. We'll go through your cycle history in detail — length, regularity, symptoms across the month, birth control history, fertility history, sleep, stress, and diet. This part matters. The more precisely we understand your pattern, the more targeted the treatment.
For most menstrual and hormonal issues, I recommend weekly sessions across 3 full cycles (about 3 months). Cycles change slowly — you're teaching a system that took years to drift into its current pattern that a different pattern is possible. Most patients feel real shifts by cycle 2 and see the full change by cycle 3.
